| It is believed that underglaze blue and white porcelain (as shown in this painting) was first made in China during the Tang Dynasty. Starting early in the 14th century, blue and white porcelain rapidly became the main product of Jingdezhen in Jiangxi Province, reaching the height of its technical excellence during the later years of the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1653 - 1722). Introduced to Europe in the 14th century, Chinese porcelains were regarded as objects of great rarity and luxury. |
